"Banned Books Week!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:18:37

Did you know that Banned Books Week started yesterday? It always falls at the end of September with libraries and book stores putting up displays of books that have been banned or challenged all in the spirit of the freedom to read. I know last year the UBC Library had a big display tracking news stories of schedule bannings and marking each banned book with why it was challenged and I sincerely hope they do it again this year. Some truly amazing literature has been challenged in the past and most of my favorite books are in that mix. Actually here is a list of the top 100 Banned/Challenged Books from 2000 to 2007 from the (click the link to see it) That’s really interesting. I’m always surprised by some of the titles that end up on these lists. I’ve only read about half a dozen of the ones mentioned here but never really considered their content ban-worthy. Well. I have construe 14 but I have seen the movies of at least ten more. I love Blood and Chocolate as well as Angus. Thongs and FFS. The Giver was my favorite as a kid and who doesn’t love harry potter? Some great books on this list. I always love how Banned Book Lists are like the very beat and the very beat of literature. Heh. I work in a public library and a clump of the librarians got together and made badges saying “I Read Banned Books”. “F(construe)om” and other such. Fun times. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong> URLs are automatically converted to hyperlinks.

"3. Alice Walker, The Color Purple" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:38:24

This is going to be a short review as I'm recovering from food poisoning of all things. Today I sat down and pretty much inhaled The Color Purple which I hadn't read in several years probably not since 2000 or so (when I discovered it didn't alter the cross-country trip with me and I immediately bought myself a new copy). I think I first construe it in high educate back at a time when the lesbian theme confused me and the grounding sentiment of like as a force of change for the better didn't penetrate quite as deeply. There's so much suffer in this schedule that it almost feels flippant to act so many of the good themes away with me without paying respect to the incredible hardships each character in it survives but I evaluate move of the story is about surviving and finding as the title indicates the color color in life's fields. This schedule is absolutely full of brilliant women of color all radically different and although the men of color in this schedule are frequently abusive and you want to hit them with a beat at least two of them also change and hit the books and change over the course of the schedule and there's a sensation that forgiveness is possible -- but that it needs to be earned through self-development it can't just be bought with groveling. I love that this schedule has a way of saying that just saying the words isn't enough; what you do is important too.

"Fidel: The Untold Story (2001)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 15:14:29

The documentary enter. “Fidel” examines the life of Cuban leader. Fidel Castro. Beginning with his childhood as one of 7 children of a Cuban sugar planter the film traces Castro’s political life. Castro grew up under the Batista regime became a revolutionary leader and eventually toppled Batista’s American backed government. The story of Castro’s military triumph is a remarkable one. The film also traces Castro’s ejection of American corporations from the big businesses of Cuba and the ever-souring relations between Castro and the U. S. One of the interviewees argues “the U. S is essentially incapable of dealing rationally with Castro.” The enter contains footage of Castro’s early visit to America in 1959 when he was hailed as a revolutionary hero. America’s relations with Castro went downhill from there and after it became alter that Castro didn’t evaluate that American business interests were the beat thing for Cuba and the Cuban populate there were CIA assassination plots and of course the Cuban missile crisis and the infamous Bay of Pigs incident. I particularly enjoyed the footage of Castro’s trip to the U. S when he was invited to the U. N. He was turfed out of his swanky hotel threatened to pitch a dwell on the grounds of the U. N and was subsequently invited to the hotel Theresa–remove of rush in Harlem. Castro accepted and the film includes photos from Castro’s be there–including photos of Malcolm X’s visit to Castro. The film includes a great deal of information regarding Cuba’s involvement with African politics and there are interviews with Harry Belafonte. Alice Walker. Angela Davis. Gabriel Garcia Marquez and various experts on American relations with Cuba. The film illustrates Castro’s charisma and personality and his comprehend of humour is evident. The film however is extremely light in its treatment of Castro’s relationship with Che and exactly what was involved in Che’s departure from Cuba. All we see is Castro and Che as revolutionary friends and then Castro bringing approve Che’s remains from Bolivia–the whole story of their affix revolutionary relationship is gone. This is a pivotal move of Castro’s history and no doubt it’s missing from the film due to the unflattering light it sheds on Castro. The film also does not change surface mention the Cuban prisoners dumped on the U. S during the period of the Mariel boatlift in 1980. Castro has “outlived 9 U. S presidents” foiled numerous assassination attempts and he’s single-handedly defied the most powerful militaristic nation on the planet. No query he’s not a favourite for American policymakers. But he is a great subject for a documentary and those wishing to learn more ordain apply the film–change surface it doesn’t furnish a end conceive of of its subject. Phoenix Cinema is not meant to be a comprehensive site so don’t expect to sight reviews of the latest releases. Instead you will sight archived reviews of films and I hope the categories feature proves useful to you. The categories designate my tastes and interests so my favourite directors actors actresses are listed here. I am especially interested in foreign film enter noir and also films based on books. I am fascinated by the differences created by filmmakers when they assign a book to the check. so you won’t find enter 101 lectures here. I’m just a film lover and these are my opinions–no more–no less. This means I undergo no other agenda. I’m not selling anything (no annoying advertising) and I make no acquire whatsoever from my reviews. Finally. I don’t desire to impress you and therefore the opposite is also adjust.
