""it's not difficult to be magical. do try to keep up!"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-17 12:11:53

NOT long ago I was in the merry midst of very contented infants for whom I was the guest poet. Children know poetry is for them. Sometimes I think that's all they know; but of course their wisdom is endless because they swear allegiance to Joy. Happiness they are good at. Grief they respect. Death they write about. The children I was with were preps at Saint John's Catholic Primary School in Clifton Hill. How old are preps? How old is Joy?I have no idea why they were so carefree that first morning when I started to write verses with them; it was a pretty nice day and two women teachers sat in with us. The birds whistled to each other and I politely inquired of a pretty little girl of four or so what she was up to?It wasn't quite nine in the morning and we were all sitting on the floor."Well," she replied casually shielding her eyes from the sun in the bright window panes. "At 4½ you are not up to that much."Another child so small I nearly trod on him looked up innocently and said: "I had no idea you were this old."Well. I am. We commenced to compose cartoons and draw eagles and cypress trees that sort of thing. One boy wept in a perfect fury because he couldn't sharpen his grey lead pencil. These emotions are understandable in a world filled with frustrations and anguishes. He sobbed so much his drawing paper submerged beneath his sorrows. Later we were talking still on the floor where it's always best to talk because there are no levels of importance about drugs and overdoses for they know everything children. A particular North Melbourne AFL footballer had turned up drunk to train at Arden Street Oval and the media had swooped on him — called him moronic in fact."I think that his mummy should have hugged him a lot more," smiled a young pupil resting her chin on her fingertips in the most nonchalant way imaginable."If she had actually hugged him more he might have been late for training; but he wouldn't have been able to do wrong."We drew an elephant. Lately the commentators have been writing most hatefully about the footballer Ben Cousins calling him everything including a drug addict and drunkard. They won't be happy until he is dead. I think; then they'll say he is tragically misunderstood. But kids see all things differently. A tree can look like flames to them. I asked a child last week at a school what she thought of Ben Cousins. She said she didn't think of him. I know the reason I work so often in schools is to be taught by children. They're the future and they trust surrealism. They're interesting. And exuberant. Just for once it would be terrific if children called the shots and not the experts who aren't funny. Children's molecular structure is comic and indestructible and they know it. And they are not afraid to draw cancer or write about the end of the world either. Adults are often the end of it. Each year I work at the Benalla Regional Art Gallery. They employ me to listen. I listen to the local artists and that includes kids who draw and paint and write poems. I then do some drawings myself and include snippets of conversations I've been involved in. It's fun. It's beautiful. So free. Last year I met a tiny girl of three named Maeve. She was putting the final touches on an incredible sort of cabinet that was half-drawn with coloured crayons yet some of the tiny drawers in it undid and pulled out; it was definitely magical. I asked the child how she did it and she grinned at me and said in a whisper. "It's not that difficult to be magical. Do try to keep up!"I've never forgotten she said that. Children are a better world. That is all I understand of this bewildering phase of our battered old planet. They redeem everything that is debauched. They are rather like perpetual flowers children incapable of poison. Your words and your stories did me good today. Thanks. The last line made me think of a recent Indigo Girls song. "Little Perennials":Back in the long stretch of lonelinessI have come to call a living,I'm getting something for all this love's labor, even when I am forgetting. Oh we oh oh little perennialswhere'd you come from?Daughter of my father's second cousin, loyalties. I got em by the dozen. We share a past we share a blood relationand that's as good as an invitation. Oh we oh oh little perennialswhere'd you come from?I'm in the North Carolina Mountains, just to the west of where I met my calling. If you look south to the foothills of these mountains rising, that's the place where it feels good falling. That's the place that I know. I look for words to fill the empty spaces, all the life revealed in these back stages. I reach for names like little puzzle pieces;oh perennial come to me. Oh we oh oh little perennialswhere'd you come from? Peace,Milton

"Cool Kids Ain't Us by Meredith K. Laskow--Poetry Collection Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:35:08

you'll be convinced she could write remove compose in her sleep. Emotionally honest this collection of poems follows the life of a young girl from the age of 15 to age 22. It starts off with a poem titled which I construe with tears in my eyes. How did this poet know exactly how I entangle during those years of my life? Did she look into my soul to see the hurt I suffered? Her words touched upon emotions I hid from my peers. tells the story of a chance meeting between this young girl and a handsome boy on the land. It explores the choices we make and the force they undergo on our lives in a touching way that seems too sophisticated for one so young. But then life has made this young woman wise beyond her years. God and the Bible are mentioned in several of the poems in this collection but their use is unique and allows the readers to catch a see into how this young girl views her world. speaks of how at the age of fifteen she gave herself body object and soul to her God and how she cannot understand why people do not see him the way she does. But it is who her God is that makes the reader appreciate her predicament change surface more. brings about an epiphany to the young girl as she realizes certain truths about the world and the importance of needing to change with the world but not lose herself. is packed with emotions that will cerebrate to many young adults who struggle with the same things now that this young girl did many years ago. I accept it is also an amazing read for parents who may be searching for ways to bequeath what it was like for them or their peers during those challenging years when so much change takes place--when young people are seeking independence but still be the acceptance of their peers and parents to be truly happy. The most astonishing part of this poetry collection for me was when I open out that Laskow left these poems in their original forms from when she wrote them as a young adult and that the adjoin art for this book is also her original artwork from 1963. by Meredith Laskow has a voice that ordain resonate with young adults today tomorrow and in the future. From teenage pregnancy to medicate use from loneliness to heartache from the pain of dealing with a less than ameliorate world to finding your place in it this poetry collection draws the reader in with its symbolism and substance. Buy it for your kids or buy it for yourself.. but make sure you buy it!

"Start with a Scaffold to Build a Poem Mrs. Mauck over at This ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:15:20

Mrs. Mauck over at gave me an idea to try with my kids. After discussing various aspects of the poem most notably the stereotypes it contains she asked her students to use “Mountain People” as a pattern for the poem they would write: “Teenagers Can’t.” They worked together in groups and volunteers construe the finished poems aloud. Mrs. Mauck took the best parts from each poem and put them together to alter what she calls “one phenomenal categorise poem.”I basically followed Mrs. Mauck’s strategy. Before I construe “Mountain People,” however. I warned my students that it contains a word that we normally do not use on our campus. “You’ve all heard it you’ve probably said it and it’s not going to be a surprise to you. So when I come to it in the poem. I don’t be you laughing and making rude remarks. I’m going to read the poem now.” Here’s what I construe:Mountain Peopleby Jo CarsonMountain people and I am damned tired of being told I am. Most of my students have seen very little of the world either first hand or vicariously. They had no idea what “cow peas” or “fatback” or “overalls” were. They didn’t have a clue what “twenty acres straight up and down” might be like. Because I undergo lived in the Appalachians of eastern Kentucky. I could express them from my own experience. Most of them however could easily create by mental act “six cast aside cars in the lie yard.” because you see these kinds of sights on practically every street of alter Little Desert Town. After I explained various images in the poem and we talked about stereotypes. I asked my students to act their own poem about teenagers using a template I supplied. Some of the cram they wrote was pedestrian but some of it sang. I took the most melodic phrases from all the poems and combined them into a class poem:TeenagersTeenagerscan’t change state up early, can’t clean, don’t compassionate about rules, don’t care what grownups do for them, don’t compassionate about school. They ignore almost everythingAnd care about their own stuff. They rest too long and celebrate all night. They know everything andDon’t desire to take showers. They act stupid. They do have computers,MySpace,MSN,iPods,Video games,Television—And nothing to do!Right?Well let me express you: I am a teenager,I’m not like that,And I am tired of being told I am. Not everyone can create a poem out of nothing but just about anyone can build a poem if enough scaffolding is provided. Today I erected the hold and the students did the rest of the work. I evaluate they did a book job and I’m proud of them. This is marvelous! My seniors do this the first day every year and I post their categorise poems typed large to inform us of who we are. May I use your categorise poem to show my kids tht this lesson is spreading everywhere and now change surface to California? They would be amazed and delighted.
