"Week 6: Poems by Emily Bronte" posted by ~Ray

Reading: selected poems by Emily Bronte. Comments: I do realize that poetry by Emily Bronte was never anywhere on the syllabus but I didn't realize that Wurthering Heights was allotted two weeks of reading in the syllabus. I thought it was only one. Thus. I didn't write two posts about the book. In order to fill that space I have decided to include my comments on a volume of her poetry that I picked up at the bookstore while I was there ordering Daughters of Decadence. I figured since the poems are written by the same author they will suffice as the selection for the week. Besides a little extra reading never hurt anyone! The first thing I'd like to say about Emily Bronte in general is that she's consistent -- consistently gloomy. Every single poem I read in the volume followed at least one but usually more of four themes: darkness cold despair and death. Even the poems that began in a happy or cheerful tone (like "To the Blue Bell") end in slow death and mourning. She seems incapable of looking at any subject in the present tense without seeing its inevitable demise. Still though the themes were a tad redundant she did have some profound insights regarding those themes. My favorite three poems were: "High waving heather," "Stars," and "No coward soul is mine." I thought that "High waving heather" was really a great example of her unusual rhyme schemes. I had never seen the scheme ABAAAB-ACAAAC-DEDDDE before but I thought that the insistent nature of the scheme really added to the poem's tension and intensity. The entire poem was very powerful. I didn't actually feel like it said anything particularly profound in terms of making a larger point about the human condition or anything like that but I did feel really swept away and moved by the poem which is really something for its own sake. I thought that "Stars" was really interesting because it was the first poem I read of hers (but certainly not the last) that dwelt directly with night as a subject (as opposed to just allusions to darkness) and because of the interesting reversal of day with night in her sleep schedule. She discusses her sleepless nights spent watching the stars while the stars watch her (an interesting personal connection to such a huge phenomenon) and then sleeping when the violent sun comes up wishing to return to the darkness she finds so comforting. The final two stanzas read: "Oh stars and dreams and gentle night;/Oh night and stars return!/And hide me from the hostile light,/That does not warm but burn;//That drains the blood of suffering men;/Drinks tears instead of dew;/Let me sleep through his blinding reign,/And only wake with you!" It is hard to tell whether she is speaking about daylight literally or using it as a figure for the passage of time or both -- but in any of those contexts it's certainly an interesting poem. I think that "No coward soul is mine" is an important poem because it shows just how consistent her themes are -- not just across her poems but also in her only novel. Wurthering Heights. The poem shares several memorable ideas or themes from the novel as is clearly evidenced by the penultimate and ultimate stanzas: "Though Earth and moon were gone/And suns and universes ceased to be/And thou wert left alone/Every existence would exist in thee//There is not room for Death/Nor atom that his might could render void/Since thou art Being and Breath/And what thou art may never be destroyed." This mirrors closely Cathy's speech to her servant as a young girl about Heathcliff. She says that they are one and that if everything else perishes and he remains she will still exist etc. Obviously there is a strong connection in all of her writing -- and this poem is a great evidence of that fact. My final comment about Emily Bronte's poems may seem sort of a random one but here it is all the same: her poems remind me of Edward Hopper paintings. This may sound odd but I have always loved Edward Hopper and was recently (within the last month or so over fall break) at the Edward Hopper exhibit at the National Gallery in Washington DC. I saw many of his most famous paintings in person including "Chop Suey" and "Nighthawks," but those weren't the painting that really struck me because they were about interaction or interruption of interaction. The thing that really struck me was how many of his paintings seem to be sort of melancholy and to depict an isolation or alienation of the subject (where there is one). Many have the view through a window into a room many have just one subject on a bed or a chair some are just a room with no subject -- in most cases the walls seem to be almost cage-like keeping the subjects in and the rest of the world out. There seems to be such a division with the world and a resulting quiet and controlled despair that really reminds me a lot of Emily Bronte's poetry. In all of her poetry you see her depicted as sort of cut off from the world. Either by a geographical situation or the weather or her own feelings and inclination -- she feels herself to be cut off from virtually everyone and everything. The daylight friends who have died nature progressive stages of development etc. Anyway. I just thought it was interesting how while I was reading her poems. Hopper paintings kept popping up in my mind.
