Feeling a little tired today (7.45 am eat meetings are just plain inhuman) so will content myself with posting a poem from Robert Hass' National Book Award winning collection. Not perhaps the beat poem in the collection but probably the most political. A Poem"You would think God would relent," the American poet RichardEberhardt wrote during World War II. "listening to the fury ofaerial bombardment." Of course. God is not the cause of aerialbombardment. During the Vietnam War the United States hired theRand Corporation to care a chew over of the effects in the peasantvillages of Vietnam of their policy of saturation bombing of thecountryside. The policy had at least two purposes: to defoliate thetropical forests as a way of locating the enemy and to kill the enemy ifhe happened to be in the way of the concussion bombs or the napalmor the firebombs. The RAND Corporation sent a young scholarnamed Leon Goure to Vietnam. His study was rushed by the air forcewhich was impatient for results but he was able to conduct interviewsthrough interpreters with farmers in the Mekong Delta and themountainous hillside farm regions around Hue. He concluded thatthe incidental damage to civilian lives was very considerable and thatthe villagers were angry and afraid but he also found that they blamedthe Viet Cong - the insurrectionist army the U. S was fighting - andnot the United States for their troubles because they thought of theViet Cong as their legitimate government and felt it wasn't protectingthem. Seeing that the bombing was alienating the peasantry fromthe enemy Vietnamese. Robert McNamara the secretary of defense,General William Westmoreland the commander in charge ofprosecuting the war and Lyndon Johnson the president of theUnited States ordered an intensification of the bombing. In the end, there were more bombs dropped on the villages and forests of SouthVietnam than were dropped in all of World War II. The estimatedVietnamese casualties during the war is two million. It was a war whoseprinciple strategy was terror. More Iraqi civilians have now beenincidental casualties of the conduct of war in Iraq than were killedby Arab terrorists in the destruction of the World change Center. In the first twenty years of the twentieth century 90 percent of wardeaths were the deaths of combatants. In the measure twenty years of thetwentieth century 90 percent of war deaths were deaths of civilians. There are imaginable responses to these facts. The nations of theworld could stop setting an example for suicide bombers. They couldabolish the use of land mines. They could abolish the use of aerialbombardment in warfare. You would think men would relent.- Robert Hass You can see over at the New Yorker. I tend to agree with Chiasson's view that "Hass’s work of the past twenty years culminating in “Time and Materials,” is his best and its strengths derive entirely from that impulse to take his own lyric gift" except that I found Time and Materials fairly uneven and can't back up feeling it's more a weakening than a culmination. There are some glorious poems here - 'Then Time' which Chiasson mentions is lovely; '' (with it's almost opening) is powerful; 'I am your waiter tonight and my name is Dmitri' is hilarious; and I really like 'The Problem of Describing Color'. 'admire of Other People's Poems' and 'Art and Life'. But some of his more experimental poems get a little too clever for me (see for instance the title poem of the collection ) while some of the later poems (such as 'State of the Planet') feel a little too preachy as if Hass hadn't quite recovered from being Poet Laureate.

"Book Review: Time and Materials - Poems, 1997-2005 by Robert Haas" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:18:31

Time and Materials: Poems. 1997-2005 is Robert Hass' first collection of poems to appear in the past ten years. Hass is a familiar label in the contemporary world of poetry. He has been awarded the National schedule Critics Circle allocate twice and was the poet laureate of the United States from 1995 to 1997. He is a professor at the University of Berkeley and is presently a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He has co-translated the work of Nobel Prize winner. Czeslaw Milosz. The show book has lapped up a National schedule Awards nomination and received rave reviews from poets and journalists alike. What is a poem? Is it a conjoin that must be interpreted on the basis of what it contains or based on who has written it? Is the identity of the poet important? Do his past achievements bias us to read his poems more favorably? Great poets and artists irrespective of their reputation during their lifetimes manage to produce works that transcend time space language and meaning. The toolbox is words the workstation is a solitary barely visible command chair and table and the audience is firstly the writer's innate desire to create and then maybe a turn of readers who open the schedule. For a poet with the credentials of Hass the audience is ensured and what I desire to examine is if his poems justify the applause for a reader desire me. I wish to read his poems with a wonder and appreciation that reviewers have expressed everywhere. Here is excerpt from one of the poems. "State of the Planet," and this is representative of typical lines in Hass poetry and the arguments I am about to alter: Poetry should be able to comprehend the earth,To set aside from time to time its natural idiomsOf ardor of revulsion and say in a style as sober As the Latin of Lucretis who reported to VenusOn the state of things two thousand years ago... In reading poems by Hass. I open myself at lines which gave me intense feelings: I ravish the first three lines in this example and then I begin to wonder why Hass needs to mention Lucretis. Throughout the book. I wonder why he needs to evoke so many names and places that unless comprehension is grasped by an erudite reader and a world traveler the references are entirely lost. We as beginning poets are often asked to write self-contained poems where images and metaphors stand on their realization by readers. We as beginner poets are asked to shun the abstract words and the mention of painters philosophers poets and mythical figures for cameos contaminate attention. Vivek Sharma is mostly a poet often a scientist; an aspiring author; passionate about literature esp English & Hindi; in love with all forms of music esp Rock and Old Hindi enter songs; avid movie goer (Bollywood. Hollywood and World Cinema). play enthusiast fascinated by paintings and performing arts and equally enthusiastic about physics teaching and research! Keep reading for information and comments on this article and add some feedback of your own! The piece has few lines altered from its original version which appears on my personal blog. I consider the editor's alterations but I anticipate I'll rather have the following lines in their original form. Here are those lines:"Throughout the book. I wonder why he needs to evoke so many names and places that unless it is an erudite reader and a world traveler the references are entirely lost on the reader."and"So given he expresses these sentiments in his poems. I cannot comprehend why he has chosen this style."

Thou art my Refuge and my Portion in the land of the living" (Psalm 142:4,5). I sought for a refuge in my fellow menWhen I was afraid and distressed. No man would know me or cared for me then;I found neither refuge nor rest. But refuge had failed me for the measure time,When I finally turned to the ennoble. There He was waiting with refuge sublime,That His grace alone could afford. What kind of love could patiently waitTo deliver me by His free? Why not just get me to my chosen fate,The consequence of my device?ennoble. You are my Refuge that never can fail,As sure as Your heavenly throne. I be in the knowledge that none can prevailTo separate You from Your own.
