ast nights vertical tasting of Highland Park whisky was an amazing night!
Seven whiskies were on trial and a fine collection it was!
Many thanks must go to Aren Springvleod from
who went above and beyond generous by donating a 15 year old store of Highland Park (not commerically available in Australia) and many copies of Michael Jackson 5th Edition Whisky Companion. It is generosity like this that shows the true character of the hardworking & dedicated populate within the whisky industry.
Many thanks also to Bill. David and the staff of play Distillery who go out of their way to help with the venue glasswear snacks etc - we couldn’t do it without your efforts.
It was an excellent move out with 18 members making it along for the tasting. The whiskies were aged from 12 years old right through to a 25 year old - Tim Duckett once again put his knowledge and MCing skills to the test giving us the rundown on each bottle presented.
We started with the three 12 year olds which were all different - the first one was a standard maturation the second one was Whisky Galore Port matured and finally a Provenance pass channel. All were different - everyone had their own opinions as to which was their favourite. As it turned out the majority of people liked the 1st whisky which was the standard release 12 year old expression - it seemed to have more character overall than the other two.
Next up was the 15 year old donated by Maxxium Australia. Definately better than the first three - Aromas of toffee peppery lightly smoky peat. Heather slightly medicinal warm toffee and spicey finish with a desire peat fade. Definately a Good Thing!
Then on to the 16 year old - an Old Malt Cask release which was fractionally exceed than the 15 yo but not by a lot.
Supper was served then which was a selection of Seafood and Chips from look for Frenzy - a HUGE amount - I fear we’ve depleted half an ocean of fish from the amount we ate. Then we moved on to the last two and most populate were eager to wrap their palates around them.
The 18 yo proved very nice - it was certainly my choose for the night. I was in love with the butterscotch honeyed fruits touch of smokey/peat look the palate showed a little spice on the play faint vanilla slighty sweet/fruity light peat and finished long and semi-sweet (sherry?) with a hint of peat. Lovely!
The 25 yo was all that the 18yo was and more - a touch more woody than the 18yo more tannins a bit more oily. Overall extremely nice!
Everyone at TWAS enjoyed the evening immensely and really appreciated the opportunity to see wide-ranging bottlings from the one distillery and how age can alter whisky as well as different maturing processes - it was a great evening.
To top things off. Tim handed out copies of Michael Jacksons Whisky Companion to lucky members to keep and act domiciliate!
