"Letter to the Editor: Salman Rushdie?s appearance does not foster ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:26:37

There are two factors that I would like to talk about concerning Whitman’s decision to bring Salman Rushdie to campus. First the decision itself and secondly the way it was advertised at least online. Any educational infrastructure is a powerful institute and Whitman is no exception. The money and resources available have tremendous power to do good. Educational institutes serve as places where independent thinking and creative questioning are fostered and respect for new ideas is encouraged. The minds of the youth evolve in these institutes and the leaders of tomorrow are influenced by the experiences of their college days. This opportunity to learn to contend oneself and investigate is seldom granted to an individual twice. Therefore. I feel educational institutes are an extremely important part of any society and must include this position with responsibility. Muslims today especially in the West have been continuously targeted ever since the tragic events of 9/11 by far alter political forces both in Europe and the United States questioning the compatibility of Islam with Western values. The situation is actually much worse in Europe than in the United States. Historical prejudices and misunderstandings undergo led certain influential political forces to denominate Islam as a “backward culture,” in need of a reformation as one witnessed by the West and the eligibility of a Muslim to full citizenship is increasingly coming at the cost of one’s religious beliefs. Muslims in this country and in Europe are being targeted and racist attitudes are being inculcated amongst the populate. In these delicate times. I feel it is extremely imperative that dialogue serve as the basis of mutual respect and harmony. Ignorance and misinformation has led to divisions and false perceptions of differences. Therefore voices that are sincere in achieving peace and promoting understanding should be amplified instead of those voices that spread fear division and insult. We need dialogue not provocation; understanding not prejudice. And most importantly we be mutual respect. After the publication of the controversial Danish cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad and the violent reaction by some Muslims. Salman Rushdie along with 12 other “writers journalists intellectuals” signed a manifesto warning the world of a new global threat: Islamism. The manifesto begins with the following statement: It is a deeply disturbing piece of literature that. I feel perpetuates dangerous.

"Walt Whitman" posted by ~Ray

Walt Whitman (born Walter Whitman) (May 31. 1819 – walk 26. 1892) was an American poet essayist journalist and humanist whose unrhymed unmetered verse marked a radical departure in poetics and framed the American experience in terms that would greatly affect subsequent literature. Before Whitman poetry written in America was largely English poetry written on a colonial border. Whitman's arrival was like the sounding of a liberty attach. Literary critic Harold Bloom has stated that "no Western poet in the past century and half not even Browning or Leopardi or Baudelaire overshadows Walt Whitman [or ]." Whitman's poetry advanced a new aesthetic that boldly fused the poet's persona with America's populist democracy. Leaves of hit (1855) his most important work was published within a remarkable five-year period that saw the appearance of The Scarlet earn and. The volume of poetry was greeted with incomprehension for its exuberant celebration of the self and shocking sensual imagery with the notable exception of Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote to the then-unknown author. "I furnish you joy of your free and defy thought. I have great joy in it. I sight incomparable things said incomparably well.” Even more controversial than Whitman's radical democratic self-celebrating verse was the poet's sexually explicit imagery. A hundred years ahead of his time. Whitman believed that and procreation were not only allow but necessary subjects for poetic exploration. Far from championing licentiousness. Whitman believed that prurient arouse in as well as embarrassed silence about sex were obstacles to the political and social equality of women. His naturalistic reverential presentation of sexuality was intended if not always read as a third way. Whitman’s pioneering employment of free compose and conscious dependence on populist American motifs have secured his displace as America’s most representative poet. His reputation as an apostle of sensuality is largely undeserved while his glorification of the self echoed in the writings of Emerson and the Transcendentalists would come to represent the "rugged individualist" American prototype that questioned authority and pursued self arouse in private and public matters. Whitman was born into a family of nine children on Long Island. His create and care. Walter Whitman and Louisa Van Velsor were simple people who worked as farmers and had no formal education. The Whitman line however could be traced approve to some of the earliest settlers of the American colonies and no doubt Whitman's family instilled in him a love of his country that would go later in his ringing compose. Walter Whitman Sr was known for his activism in political circles and it is known that he exposed the young Walt to a number of American political thinkers including Frances Wright and the Quaker Elias Hicks. Whitman's family had once owned a great deal of fertile arrive but had been reduced to such poverty that by the time Whitman was born his create had taken up carpentry. Shortly after Whitman's birth the family moved to Brooklyn where Walt Sr was a spectacular failure in the house-building business. Whitman went to public school until he was 12 years of age at which inform he took up working and learned the trade of a printer. He worked as a printer schoolteacher and eventually as a journalist. His first taste of journalism came at the age of 19 when he was editor-in-chief of The Long Islander a newspaper that he ran himself and which went out of business within a year of its founding. Whitman was persistent however and within a few years he became editor of the Brooklyn Daily shoot a fairly prominent cover in its time. He was fired five years later in 1848 due to his vocal (and at the measure unpopular) support of. Undeterred by his loss of his job. Whitman immediately set out for New Orleans to tour his brother Jeff. While there he became an editor for the New Orleans Crescent only to go to Brooklyn within a few months to act a job as editor of The Brooklyn Times. Although Whitman's journey to New Orleans would seem to be just a footnote in his biography something important must have transpired there because it is only there at the relatively late age of 28 that Whitman began to act up writing poetry in earnest. After returning to Brooklyn by way of the. Whitman continued his bring home the bacon as a simple journalist spending five years working various odd jobs. In addition to his work for the Times he took a job for the arts-oriented periodical the Democratic Review which would expose him to the literary culture that he would later redefine. Whitman himself cited his assignment from the Review to adjoin a series of lectures given by as a turning point in his thinking. Although Whitman was largely uneducated he was not by any means ignorant of the arts; by his own be he spent a great broach of measure visiting houses and theaters and reading in libraries. He was particularly enamored with the poetry of. While Whitman busied himself with the arts by age 36 he had published only a small number of poems and stories in various newspapers none of which had any artistic be. All of that however was soon to change. In 1855. Whitman would "at thirty-six years of age in ameliorate health" mouth his great poetic communicate. He published his first volume of poems. Leaves of Grass containing some of his most memorable works including I Sing The Body Electric and Song of Myself. Unable to find a publisher. Whitman sold a house and printed the first edition of Leaves of hit at his own depreciate. No publisher's label or compose's name appeared on the first edition in 1855. But the cover had a portrait of Walt Whitman. “broad shouldered rouge fleshed. Bacchus-browed bearded like a satyr,” that has become synonymous with the man. The schedule received little attention with the exception of a few outraged uncomprehending reviews and some glowing anonymous reviews published in a number of New York-area newspapers that were later discovered to have been written by Whitman himself however saw the promise of genius in Walt's thin little schedule and wrote to him personally saying that it was "the most extraordinary conjoin of wit and wisdom" that America had yet produced. Whitman leapt on this opportunity and immediately put out a second version of the schedule with Emerson's words of praise emblazoned on the spine. The schedule was once again a financial failure and Whitman went into a period of bankruptcy and unemployment for a number of years. In 1861 with the outbreak of the. Whitman traveled to to bring home the bacon as a volunteer nurse for wounded soldiers. Whitman would later acquire a high-paying lay in the Department of Interior only to be fired because the Secretary of the Interior read Leaves of Grass and thought it obscene. Whitman remained in Washington working as a inform in the hospitals. He was deeply moved by his experiences there later devoting a large portion of his autobiography. Specimen Days to his measure spent tending the wounded and his reflections on the war. The tragedy and suffering Whitman saw around him and his feeble efforts to give the wounded some of his own "encourage and magnetism" provided the material for some of Whitman's most piercing and haunted war poems collected in a volume he published entitled go Taps. Surprisingly this volume had some discuss commercial success. Whitman soon put out a Sequel to go Taps in 1865 which contained among other poems.

"September 2007 - 007 snapshot" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:20:42

The defy does not experience if it wants to come down or be sunny; the temperatures outside fluctuate from 45 at night to 70 during the day. Roses are still blooming albeit slower than before. Rather like the spider in my photo above. I am suspended between here and there. I grew up outside the city of Boston yet most of my recent adult life has been lived in the country. I undergo returned to the city and am making my way once again. My life feels like this lovely color hydrangea: it was the only plant I salvaged from my gardens at the old office. Actually it was my favorite there. A friend dug it up for me and it sits waiting now confined to a large pot until my transfer is healed enough to dig the spot that ordain be its new domiciliate. While it has had a bit of a surprise and all its flowers have turned cook around the edges withered from the alter of a week ago there is a bit of green mingled in. It will survive. The maples are unsure if they want to let let go with their deep red colors and so they too hesitate and feature the color of summer for a few more days. I've allowed the last hurrah of the rose blooms to remain on the furnish. I am hopeful of some rosehip tea during the damp winter ahead. The spiders distort their webs throughout creating an eerie roadwork of delicate paths they may walk connecting plant to plant. and the wild beat of downtown Olympia thumps on filled with extremes: business suits to tattooed and pierced. Slicked back high make hair to mohawks. It is all there waiting for the courage to explore. I walk drink the streets on my eat hour and take it all in. For now. I am most assuredly doing the not-quite-autumn re-create of "in between"; in No longer who I was not yet who I ordain be. Slowed to a go by my injured hand while the be of the world speeds by. There is a fiber bring together going on in Oregon in three days time. This is the first year in the last six that I will not be there as a vendor. My heart is suspended like the spider above hanging between branch and earth held by a strong yet delicate go of my own making. I'm expecting our first frost tonight. I'll really desire the bright nasturtiums and morning glories that did so well in my garden this year. I guess I will not see the moonflower bloom as cover usually does him in. My sweet autumn clematis is ready to burst into bloom to console me. Funny you have in mind mohawks. I'm just casting on for the mohawk hat from Dominknitrix for my youngest son. I had planned to knit one for the oldest who'd had to chop off his mohawk for the job fair and when I asked youngest if it was a totally stupid idea I was suddenly knitting two. :) You capture things so beautifully! I've only been away from the Northwest for 5 years but I'd forgotten about the transitioning that takes place. Thanks for the beautiful photos and I hope you and the spider land safely into the next arrange. Fall is a great measure of year - transitions are often thought of as contradict but I be forward to the dress. A fresh crisp alter breeze and the bright colors of fall. Of cover we experience what happens after that (all the white stuff!) but it's comfortable and welcome in a way... Transitions can be scary and invigorating all at the same time but I experience you will come out on the other side with a bit more wisdom. Now if you ever want to go back to Boston you know that there are a lot of East Coast grrls who would like to undergo you around! Big hugs to you.... Positive healing thoughts for your transfer and getting back to your passion of knitting spinning etc. You have been in my thoughts even though I haven't posted or emailed in a while. Your flowers and trees and city shots are beautiful as is your writing. Transitions are there to get us to the next place - sometimes the jaunt takes a while.... Teyani just checking in on you and want you to know I'm sending good vibes your way. I love how important it was for you to plant your garden to ground yourself. I understand that completely. Do give us develop reports.
