"Interview with Ball Four Author, Jim Bouton" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:55:56

What are you up to these days?I'm the commissioner of the and we staged our first annual Northeast Regional Playoffs and Vintage Baseball World Series this summer in Westfield. Mass. So this is an old-timers unify then?Yeah it's baseball played [with] 19th century rules uniforms and equipment. It's a step back in time. We create a 19th century atmosphere with costumed actors and kids selling cracker jacks with newsboy caps and suspenders. is one of the best selling sports books of all measure but you didn't always get favorable reactions for having written it. What has the legacy of the schedule become and how are you treated by the baseball establishment today? was originally given bad -- harsh reviews by Major League Baseball and a few players and mostly sports writers that were disturb that I had written about things that had never been written about before in sports. And so they were sort of angry that a baseball player of all people would cross the boundary line. But once the book came out and people realized it wasn't a bad book about baseball -- it was a good book about baseball -- it was funny made the players more human more likable and turned a lot of people onto baseball. It didn't turn anybody off. But that was years ago when it first came out in 1970. Since then it's been recognized as a very good book about baseball. It was selected a few years ago by the New York Public Library as one of the most important books of the century. I've updated it three times: 1980. 1990 and 2000. (The latest edition. Ball Four: The Final Pitch can be found at Bouton's ). You compose "greenies" several times in the book. How extensive was their use when you played? Did everybody use them?I don't know but in the book I asked Don Mincher how many guys are taking Greenies. I said "Fifty percent?" And he said. "Hell way more than that." I would probably guess maybe 60 to 70 percent. But you have to distinguish greenies -- the peptos as they were called -- from steroids. Greenies only allowed you to play up to your ability. If you didn't get a good night's rest or you had a hangover it would accept you to play up to your ability or at least some players thought that. It did not create a different human being. It did not change your physical makeup. It did not allow you to play beyond your ability your normal ability as steroids do and as Human Growth Hormone does. Are you saying then that greenies was pretty much the only substance of that nature that was floating around at that time? That was the only substance players took that could be called a drug in any way. As you mentioned these days it's HGH and steroids that are all the buzz. How do you evaluate the game evolved to this inform where no slugger or power pitcher is immune from suspicion?Baseball got itself into this position because it has refused to have a strong medicate policy and for that I blame the Players Association. They're very short-sighted. They elevated the players' rights to privacy above their rights to good health and fair competition. The Players Association should have protected the players who were not taking the drugs; change surface if most of the guys wanted them the Players Association should have protected the non-users who have to compete against the users. It's really not fair is it?No it's not and now you've got a bunch of records that are going to be hard to end. It's unfair from two levels: first of all it's unfair to the records that were broken and were set by guys years ago who weren't on performance enhancing drugs. And now they're going to be broken in the future by guys who aren't going to be on performance enhancing drugs because they're going to undergo tougher drug laws. So you're going to have a set of records that are going to be distorted and are going to be standing for longer than they should be. So are you in the camp then that would go for asterisks attached to some of those records?Yeah. A color ribbon adorn needs to be appointed and be given a launch budget and investigate just exactly what kind of impact steroids have on batting and pitching. And also [to determine] what period of time were they prevalent and to what extent undergo they affected the numbers the records. This would be not a punitive thing; this would be investigatory simply to establish which records are legitimate and which ones are not. And then they need to figure out where the force is. If it's on home runs -- for example. 40 percent change magnitude in home runs as a result of steroids -- they need to apply those numbers to the numbers that were actually hit so that next to the actual number of home runs hit you'd have in parentheses a steroid adjusted number. I label it the S. A. N. It would sit there in parentheses next to the actual number hit. [Jim goes into more dilate at this point but you can read more of his thoughts by clicking ]. Switching gears. Tim Wakefield is the only study League pitcher that I know of still throwing the press roll. Does he represent the end of an era or does the knuckler have staying cater? There undergo never been more than a few knuckle ball pitchers at any given measure; never more than two or three. In some years there's only been one so this is not unusual to undergo a lone knuckle ball pitcher. There may not be too many more however because the knuckle roll takes a lot of patience and you undergo to throw it all the time. And you have to learn it as a kid and I don't know if kids are willing to pay that kind of measure learning a knuckle roll. They've got the computer they're skateboarding they've got all sorts of other things they're doing. Most of the guys that I know who threw the knuckle ball did nothing but play baseball when they were kids. That's all they did all day long. They didn't have Little League even. The advantage of that was you didn't just play between 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon with the parents and uniforms; you played when the sun came up and you went home when the sun went down. You played baseball all day desire. It's all you played all summer desire. You don't have that anymore in America which is why fewer and fewer players are American-born. Most of the new guys that are coming in the really talented roll players are the ones that are coming from the Dominican Republic where they play baseball desire they used to play in the US. However. I do think that the knuckle ball is uniquely suited to the Asian culture because the press ball is a pitch that requires a choose of letting go. You can't control it. You can't dominate it. You undergo to sort of let it go. It's like a Zen philosophy almost and requires incredible patience. So I can see very easily young Asian players spending enormous hours learning and perfecting the knuckle ball. I would not be affect if there was a wave of Japanese knuckle ball players. Chinese press roll players coming in because thousands of kids there have had the patience and the time to develop this fling. Who do you desire for this year's World Series?I haven't been following it that closely. I generally predict teams that I'm rooting for. I'd like to see Lou Piniella's Chicago Cubs in there because Lou and I played ball together for awhile in spring training. I experience him and he's a nice guy. From the American League. Detroit. It would be nice to see a Detroit - Chicago World Series.

"Holding My Breath" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:46:35

I had hoped that as I wrote things would change state easier. That it would be simple to remove into the well of what I was and where I came from. That it would be easy to displace the wooden bucket and salvage the parts of me that make up the whole of who I am. I undergo learned much about myself however. I evaluate that it the true cater of what I have written. Not only does it accept me to put those ghosts to rest (I can hear them whispering at me in my continue telling tales and distorting my vision with a kaleidoscope of images) but it allows me to experience me. The memoir ends just after I cater the man who became my preserve. But what of me after that? What of me beyond that point? I know that the road did not stop when I met Robert that there were many more trails and pathways to go. I look at my life not as one path but as several. Internally. I am a maze. Externally. I am a roadmap of crisscrossing lines. My veins are like color create lines burnt into my climb. Which do I choose to follow? Which do I decide to ignore? I direct my breath for the ending of One Step at a measure because I know it is really a beginning. I experience that the ending is coming and can only wish that I ordain experience how to create verbally it. For how does one put their emotions into words when they are not masked by the consume and mirrors of fiction? "The Siege of Mecca by Yaroslav Trofimov" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:45:00

On November 20. 1979 worldwide attention was focused on Tehran where the Iranian hostage crisis was entering its third week. The same morning—the first of a new Muslim century—hundreds of gunmen stunned the world by seizing Islam’s holiest shrine the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Armed with rifles that they had smuggled inside coffins these men came from more than a dozen countries launching the first operation of global jihad in modern times. Led by a Saudi preacher named Juhayman al Uteybi they believed that the Saudi royal family had become a craven servant of American infidels and sought a go to the exuberate of uncompromising Islam. With nearly 100,000 worshippers trapped inside the holy compound. Mecca’s bloody siege lasted two weeks inflaming Muslim rage against the United States and causing hundreds of deaths. Despite U. S assistance the Saudi royal family proved haplessly incapable of dislodging the occupier whose ranks included American converts to Islam. In Iran. Ayatollah Khomeini blamed the Great Satan—the United States —for defiling the close in prompting mobs to storm and burn American embassies in Pakistan and Libya. The desperate Saudis finally enlisted the help of French commandos led by tough-as-nails head Paul Barril who prepared the final assault and supplied poison gas that knocked out the insurgents. Though most captured gunmen were quickly beheaded the Saudi royal family responded to this unprecedented contend by compromising with the rebels’ supporters among the kingdom’s most senior clerics helping them encourage and export Juhayman’s violent brand of Islam around the world. This dramatic and immensely consequential story was barely covered in the touch in the pre-CNN pre–Al Jazeera days as Saudi Arabia imposed an information blackout and kept foreign correspondents away. Yaroslav Trofimov now penetrates this veil of conquer interviewing for the first time scores of direct participants in the siege including former terrorists and drawing on hundreds of documents that had been declassified on his communicate. Written with the pacing dilate and suspense of a real-life thriller. The Siege of Mecca reveals how Saudi reaction to the uprising in Mecca set remove the forces that produced the attacks of 9/11 and the harrowing circumstances that adjoin us today.

"An Uncompromised Orthodoxy - Theology of the Cross...part two ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:25:44

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who accept; for there is no distinction; (Romans 3:21-22).1. The Cross Declares the Word of God - sola scriptura (scripture alone)The Bible is the only authoritative Word of God though traditions; counsels; creeds; and catechisms have their displace they are not inspired writing. Only Scripture is absolutely sufficient for all matters of life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3-4). It is both perspicuous and self-interpreting (sing 19:7-9; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). It is forever settled in heaven (sing 119:89); more important than our daily food (Job 23:10-12); to be treasured above earthly riches and more desired than this world's sweetest delicacies (Psalm 19:10-11). It is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). We are to enclose it in our hearts so we wll not sin against Him (sing 119:11). How can a young man keep his way pure? By taking obey according to God's evince (Psalm 119:9). It is inerrant infallible; and the ennoble Himself has exalted His Word even above His label (Psalm 138:2). It is THIS Word that the Apostle begins to develop a theology of the cross. And he begins by first saying that the cross declares the Word of God.3.21 "But now…"That is - at this present measure (Roms. 3:26. 5:9); at this very strategic moment in the history of redemption salvation has go. It is what the Apostle calls in Gal. 4:4 "the fulness of time." And for what intend? That the "righteousness from God has been revealed." This righteousness is realized and authenticated in the life of the believer "apart from the law." Now this means that it was not and cannot be earned by men's obedience to God's law. Law-keeping is an effort in futility; for salvation and acceptance by God through obedience to the law requires a ameliorate obedience--which sinful man is completely incapable of doing. If we break one part of the law we break the whole of the law (James 2:10) So the perfect righteousness of God is obtained "apart from the works of the law." (Roms. 3:28. 4:6-8. Gal.2:16. 21; 3:10-13; Eph. 2:9; Phil. 3:9; 2 Tim. 1:9; Titus 3:5). Is Paul presenting a new doctrine here - something never heard of before? No. He is speaking about "a righteousness attested by the law and the prophets." Paul already referred to Hab. 2:4 in Romans 1:17 "see as for the proud one. His soul is not alter within him; But the righteous ordain live by his faith."So the cross confirmed and declared the Word of God in Christ fulfilling the law and all righteousness in His sinless life and ameliorate once for all free on the cross (see sing 22). For example: "Now He [Jesus] said to them. 'These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.'" (Luke 24:44). Paul must have had in object some other passages as well: I e. Gen. 15:6 - "Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness." Psalm 32:1-2 - "How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven. Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the ennoble does not impute iniquity. And in whose spirit there is no deceit!" (see also Roms. 4:3. 7-8). Two Kinds of RighteousnessThe righteousness mentioned here in vs. 21-22 is not the judging righteousness as mentioned in Romans 3:5. This is the saving righteousness of God; this is the gospel which reveals God's saving righteousness apart from the Law and is obtained through faith. How? Again the Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled the demands of the law and all righteousness in His sinless life; and its penalty and requirements in His perfect free (His active and passive obedience) and our justification was secured by His resurrection (Rom. 4:25). The ennoble also declared the Word of God after His bodily resurrection from the dead. Luke 24:24-27 says. "And some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see." 25 And He said to them. "O foolish men and slow of heart to accept in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to experience these things and to enter into His exuberate?" 27 And beginning with aMoses and with all the bprophets. He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures."Also in Luke 24:32 And they said to one another. "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road while He awas explaining the Scriptures to us?"And again in verses 44-47. "44 Now He said to them. "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and cthe Psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then He aopened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 and He said to them. "Thus it is written that the Christ.

"Genetic disorders that are written on our faces" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:26:09

The subtle imprint left on children’s faces by rare genetic disorders could soon be spotted by computer to aid diagnosis.  Scientists at University College London have developed software that is designed to sight brush aside variations in eye lay and the shape of the head nose ears and jaw.  By comparing the features with those of an average child of the same age the schedule can alter a diagnosis with 90% accuracy. A trial will soon be underway at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. London. Of the 5,000 known genetic disorders about 700 affect the approach.  Some disorders are so rare that a physician might see them only once in a lifetime which may complicate an early diagnosis. An example is Williams syndrome which affects internal organs.  Children with this complaint undergo narrower heads shorter noses and smaller jaws than average.  Boys with a study cause of inherited mental retardation have elongated faces and ears that stick out. A library of images taken all over the world on twin-lens 3D camera helped create the software. i ink dat pepz dat ave disorders r very brave 2 leave da house in da morning cause i would nt b able 2 create i would b 2 scared of wat populate would ink of me and i would nt b able 2 rest all of da stares from people xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxso good on all those how can do it and nt b scared of wat populate ink of you and nt b scared of all da sters dat you would get and people dat label all der m8ts to be and fasten pics of you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxcharlotte xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <code> <em> <i> <strike> <strong> The latest news and information on science and health with personality and perspective. alter your everyday life guided by passionately opinionated writers who compassionate about you! "Bells" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 17:16:18

I spent the weekend at a Trappist Monastery in Kentucky. This is where lived and worked. I had been on a “silent” go before so I thought I had some idea of what to evaluate. I had a mental list of things I needed to address with the Big Guy and for this I needed quiet and to be away from the distractions. It all began well…the food was adequate the setting idyllic the only difficulty came at 3:15am when the monks go to commune and begin their day. Their day begins with the bells which intend the hour of day and the “Hours” of Prayer. They pray seven times a day according to the Order of the Hours: * (at begin) Lauds (”lawds”) later separate from Matins in the West; aka “Morning Prayer” or “The Praises.”* (at ~6 AM) Prime (the “first hour”)* (at ~9 AM) Terce (the “third hour”)* (at Noon) Sext (the “sixth hour”* (at ~3 PM) None (the “ninth hour”)* (at sunset) Vespers (”Evening Prayer” or for Anglicans. “Evensong”)* (at bedtime) Compline (”COMP’-lin” aka “Night Prayer”) In our case. Lauds began at 3:15am…which meant that the bells began around 3. The first night when the bells rang I thought it must be wakey wakey time and I suppose were I a monk it WOULD undergo been. For a harried mother of 4 who has not gotten a beat nights sleep since the parenting ride began however not so much. I tried to go back to sleep and indeed I accept I succeeded until fix. By this time I was just awake…because not only did the “Hours” bells go but also the hour of day bells rang…and NOT just on the hour…every fifteen minutes. I could NOT figure this out. It was an absolute mystery until my friend Chris whispered the revelation of the Hours at eat. “They are OBSESSED with time…these monks…you see it’s a song. At accommodate after the hour it plays a accommodate of the song at half past…half the song…at 45 minutes past…three quarters of the song and then finally at the top of the hour the whole song plays.” object as I discovered at prayer measure it plays the whole song and then chimes like 150million times. I promise I’ll go through my journal when I get caught up on housework schoolwork and sleep to give a more insightful and witty commentary on my silent retreat. I had some great walks some great times of silence and prayer crying out to God and some revelation. I evaluate. I’m glad I wrote it drink while there because now that I am returned honestly all I can bequeath are the bells.
